I want to go into a little more detail about Lifestyle Strategy #1 EAT RIGHT.
But FIRST I feel the need to dismiss the common mantra that you hear touted by the media, the food industry and even health & nutrition “experts” that goes something like this, “…there are no bad foods, everything in moderation, we just need to balance calories in, with calories out…and eat less fat”.
There most definitely ARE BAD FOODS! It is also more than just a math equation taking place in your belly AND dietary fat has been unduly demonized, making way for the REAL CULPRIT(s) ‘sugar and processed chemical additives’, to do their DAMAGE!
I do believe the old adage, “You Are What You Eat“; and the SAD (Standard American Diet), is a large part of the chronic illness and obesity epidemic that we are experiencing, not only as a nation, but as a human race. We have become complacent about KNOWING where our food is coming from & CARING about exactly WHAT is in it. I don’t understand the logic of entrusting our health & quality of life to those outside of us. Is it because we don’t want to be responsible…or we don’t have time to waste, educating ourselves about these “mundane things” or do we feel the trade off of CONVENIENCE is WORTH the potential RISK to our bodies? When someone comes up with the answer to that, fill me in!
Food technology, continues to advance to the point where a majority of our food supply is being chemically engineered to “HIJACK” our brains, our waistlines and our health! We’ve been told over and over to eat less fat and calories and then the food industry conveniently comes out with a low cal, fat free version of FAKE FOODS, and we don’t even realize or question how the artificial sweeteners, processed chemicals and lack of natural fats are wreaking havoc on our health, as a trade-off.
The following two quotes pretty much say it all, short & sweet…
Jack Lalanne, when asked about diet, said, “If man made it, don’t eat it!”
Michael Pollan, author of In Defense of Food: An Eater’s Manifesto, says, “Eat REAL FOOD, not too much, mostly plants”.
Incorporating these two ideas into your Nutrition Paradigm, simplifies what it means to EAT RIGHT.
Eliminate as much processed, man-made, packaged & convenience foods as you possibly can from your diet. If you don’t know what is in it or can’t pronounce or recognize the ingredients listed, SPIT IT OUT!
SUGAR ( and artificial sweeteners) are the TRUE ENEMY we should be AVOIDING at ALL COST. And truth be told there is really NO requirement for carbohydrate in our diet (although the need for plant foods (NOT grains) is high, and inevitably provides us with starch & fiber that is beneficial, (but grains are really not a necessity; which always makes me question WHO the HECK came up with the FOOD GUIDE PYRAMID with a GIANT BASE OF GRAINS????)… Protein is important but we need to be careful not to overdo it. FAT is ESSENTIAL! Every cell in our bodies is made up with it, and our brain is mostly fat. In the absence of carbohydrates, with minimal amounts of protein, our bodies & brains will function optimally on healthy, organic sources of real FATS.
There really isn’t a MAGIC diet or even MACRO plan that works PERFECT for every single person, so that is why I work individually with nutrition clients to find their optimal personalized macro plan, to help them function & feel at their BEST. But one thing that remains CONSTANT is a recommendation to fit as much REAL, WHOLE FOOD as possible into your plan.
Choose more REAL FOOD. The fresher the better. Organic is King. I recommend spending your organic food budget first on any animal products you will be eating because conventionally grown animals can be pumped with antibiotics, hormones and fed GMO grains that are not natural or healthy for them…TOXINS in animals are stored in their fat, muscle and organs….YOU DEFINITELY don’t want to be eating their toxic tissue! So KNOW where your animal products are coming from and try to get clean sources of meats, dairy and eggs as a PRIORITY.
If you can grow some of your own produce that is great, or shop local farmer’s markets, coops, and groceries that carry locally grown and organic produce. If you cannot buy all produce organic then at least try to buy the produce that you eat in abundance, especially if they are on the EWG (Environmental Working Group) site DIRTY DOZEN list http://www.ewg.org/foodnews/dirty_dozen_list.php
The phyto-nutrients found in plant food (fruits & vegetables) is vital to our health and unfortunately we live in a toxic world and even produce grown organically today is not the same as it was even 20 years ago. Our soil is becoming more & more depleted every year and even when we try to do things the right way with natural fertilizers and amending procedures, we still come up short. Out of the 30 elements that make up everything living on the planet, at best we are only replacing maybe three into the soil. If we did that to our own bank accounts, you don’t need to be a genius to figure out how quickly we would go BROKE! SO with that being said, it is ADVISABLE to utilize some supplementation (but be smart about it)…which is a conversation for another time. I will say most everyone would benefit from at minimum, taking a phyto-nutrient rich vitamin or powdered greens; omega 3’s, vit D3, and rotating different strains of live probiotics. If you want more individual recommendations on these…make an appointment to come see me.
